At the end of last year I was delighted to attend the book launch of 'Sweet As: Contemporary Short Stories by New Zealanders'. The launch took place in Wellington and I had been invited because one of my stories appears in the collection. It was my first launch – and definitely a 'cork moment'. Perhaps I should explain the term. These days it's only champagne that comes with corks – and so a cork moment refers to an achievement grand enough to warrant the drinking of some fizz. There have been others, such as when I graduated cum laude on the first year of the Hagley Writers' Institute course and in the second year when I also graduated cum laude and my portfolio of short stories was awarded 3rd place. Another was getting a short story into Takahe literary journal. I hope there will be many more cork moments! This year is off to a good start with a poem accepted for the We'Moon 2016 desk diary (a real thrill for me as I have loved these diaries for many years) and a piece of flash fiction snaffled up by This Very Breath Journal.
